Hello Members,

As no doubt you have already heard, the bargaining team has accepted a tentative proposal so we are back to work tomorrow. We will be voting on this proposal in a few days so the following attachment will give you an idea of what the burning issues were during the past weekend. Once we know what we are going to be voting on, we can compare the documents to see what we have conceded and accepted.

September 2, 2011- Strike Bulletin #1

Late in the evening on Wednesday Aug. 31, as the clocked moved toward a midnight strike deadline, negotiators for management told us 'this was it.' They weren't prepared to move a step closer to a settlement. Left behind on the bargaining table were several of our items that needed to be addressed and a number of changes they proposed that would have eliminated some of your existing rights.

Over the coming days you are likely to hear how greedy we are and how good we have it. In the meantime let's take a reality check and separate our facts from their fiction. more...

Stand up for Good Jobs

August 27, 2011 With just a few more days left for negotiations; management is again playing games.

"The colleges claim they want to negotiate" and "if that is the case" why didn't they give our bargaining team time to respond to their proposal before making it public??

They want you to think that this is a good proposal. I for one DO NOT want a lump sum as my first year increase. A lump sum is just that - and it will not be factored into subsequent years. Heck; I don't even know if that helps our pensions?? Inflation is now sitting at 2.9%. Where does that leave you and I?

August 26th, 2011 -- Message from our OPSEU President

Dear friends,

With a provincial election just six weeks away, right-wing voices in politics and the media are about to step up their attacks on public services. They'll be calling for pay cuts, privatization, and layoffs for all of us who have chosen public service as a career.

At a time like this, we cannot be silent. Our union will play an active role in this election. We will stand up for good jobs and quality public services wherever and whenever we can.

As you read this, OPSEU members in our College Support Staff Division are in bargaining to protect good jobs. Their campaign is smart and forward-looking. It's not just about their own jobs; it's about the jobs of the future -- the jobs college students and all young people will need.

To put the future of young workers on the election agenda, OPSEU has launched a new campaign called "How Screwed Are You?" Yes, it's provocative. Yes, it's edgy. But that's why we think it will hit home with young people and their families.

The campaign web site at www.howscrewedareyou.ca features an online calculator for students, parents, and part-time workers to figure out how "screwed" they are; several humourous videos; a fun interactive game in which players rescue money from corporate tax cuts and redistribute them to better uses; and a contest with three prizes of $2,400 each.

Please check out the site, learn about the issues, and forward to friends.

In solidarity,

Warren (Smokey) Thomas, President

Ontario Public Service Employees union

August 26th, 2011 -- Message from our Chief Steward

Good Morning,

An online petition as been set up to send email automatically to all the college Presidents to lobby on the union's behalf directly into their in boxes.

The role of the committee of all college Presidents is important and influential in the bargaining process and your Union leadership is asking you to take a moment and fill out this online petition and make your voice heard in the email box of all college Presidents.

It is located here, just click the link: http://www.opseucaatsupport.org/petition/

It says:

QUOTE

I invite you now to stand up for good jobs in Ontario, and to stop the practice of hiring part-time and contract employees within the college system.

I urge the Colleges to reconsider their stance on eroding the benefits and job security of support staff and reverse it's proposed position on creating two-tiers of employee groups within the support staff. Rather, you should be creating a positive working environment, so we can focus on serving the students and maintaining the excellent level of service we are so proud of.

Now is the time when all citizens of Ontario depend on you to protect THEIR interests by protecting the existing GOOD JOBS of today and creating the GOOD JOBS of tomorrow.

I am adding my name to the list of many Ontarians who are calling for GOOD JOBS today - GOOD JOBS TOMORROW.

Please stand up for the students of today and labour force of tomorrow!

Stand up for what is right.

Stand up for the kind of Ontario you want your family to live in!

END QUOTE

Please go click the above link and go online and sign the petition.

Hello support staff members.

THANK YOU to everyone who has submitted their completed electronic MPIFs. This is the most critical information for the next phase of mobilization.

With the recent strong strike mandate, your mobilization team is pulling together information collected from the electronic MPIFs

. Submitting your electronic MPIF is your ONLY opportunity to tell us how you would like to be involved and is required to receive strike pay.

Planning has begun, if we have not received your electronic MPIF by July 25th then planning will be completed without your input and you will be assigned strike duties.

Please do not use commas when completing the electronic MPIF as it causes problems when extracting to .csv for processing and don't forget to hit the submit button after you print it.

Here is the link to the secure form:

http://opseu245.org/documents/MPIF_245-1_distributed.pdf

Some users may be asked to upgrade Acrobat Reader, please do so if requested to ensure the security features remain intact.

Please fill in all information in the form then PRINT it out and sign where it says Members Signature just below the dependents on the first page.

Send the printed and signed page to VP MEMBERSHIP, OPSEU245, Trafalgar via interoffice mail and then SUBMIT it electronically.

You will not be eligible to collect strike pay if we do not receive this form with your signature on it.

When you are done, click on the SUBMIT FORM button which will be found on the right hand corner in the top purple bar.

IMPORTANT - do not click on the Comments or Share buttons. When you click on the SUBMIT FORM button, a pop up window will appear asking you to enter your email address and name please enter your HOME email and name.

You may notice that it is being sent to tcw@mac.com . That is your VP Membership's (Tom Wilcox) secure account , it only looks like an email address, your data will NOT be emailed to this address. It will be collected securely.

And you are done. Thanks!

Thank you for helping us to gather this critical information correctly and efficiently. So far only about 114 of our approximate 350 members have returned this form. Thank you to all the members who have filled out and submitted this form already. Thanks!

To stay up to date on bargaining news you will want to check this web site daily.

We just wanted to pass on this GREAT big Thank You to all who came out to vote and make your voice heard.

Fred Oliver of our local Union reports that this means a great deal to him personally now when he sits down to bargain seriously in the coming weeks.

Quote:

Hi Folks,

Just wanted to say what a great job you all did getting the message out to our members. Thanks also to ALL the members who came out to vote to make this happen! I've said in the past that we have a great group of activists and you've proved it again. Because of your hard work and dedication our local delivered very strong support for their issues and the bargaining team. I will go into the bargaining team meeting on Monday with my head held high, proud to be a member of Local 245 with all our support!

On behalf of the bargaining team and myself, a huge THANK YOU!

Fred Oliver

End Quote

The article in the Star quotes a college wide mandate of 77% this morning.

Locally at Sheridan we can ALL be proud of out-performing the provincial average with a total of 80% (unofficially of course, ;-) you just heard it through the grapevine) in favour for Local 245! The official vote count results will be "officially" released in the days to come, probably sometime next week.
